I gave up bass many many years ago but I recently got back into playing. I feel like I’m starting all over again literally. What a way to start though. Back to the basics but Julia’s videos like this one and others are helping me tremendously.
Playing broken thirds like you did at 5:42 is a part of my typical warm up as well. I usually start my warm up by playing major and minor arpeggios starting on C major (3rd fret of A string) and working up the fret board chromatically to the 12th fret. Then, run through a major and minor in broken thirds in all keys.
I have been doing this warm up every day for years, but I've seen this video a hundred times just because I love listening to Julia. I just love her accent.
Great insight, thank you Julia! I am not a bass player but my warm up "gymnastics" without instrument are pretty much the same. I just add some strechings for thumbs, hands, arms, shoulders and neck before playing scales and after the scales before practising music. I can strongly recommend that to everybody who has muscle-tension issues....
I’m obsessed with just hearing the tone of that bass during your warmups. Aside from that beautiful tone, this was very helpful, so thanks again Julia!
Not many people would think of playing D flat scale as a warm up, but it is important to play in the flat keys and not just play follow the dots. Thanks for a very inpiring video, as are all your videos.
Love your videos and your laid back style! Been playing for about 20 years and musicians like you help me to continue to stay involved and learn new techniques. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the lesson Julia! If it helps anyone: I spend some time each day rolling my hands and forearms with golf balls. It is a tremendous help to the soft tissue.
Nice. I’ll usually add modal practice as well and work on the intervals inside of the modes. I try to switch up the fingers used a bit on my left and right hand conscientiously as well, exercising that fine motor control. Thanks.
Thanks for the input, i too started physiotherapy after i hurt my nerves from using wrong posture and position of both hands. You are a cool instructor / teacher.
I like your way. Thank you. I am a veteran guitar player and I am beginning to play the bass guitar for a week now. And I stumbled on your you tube lessons and its cool. Cheers !
This is such a great teaching video, may I use it to teach my beginners group at school. I think you will inspire my students especially the girls because of your infectious positive attitude, as well as beaming smile.
Dear Julia Thank You so much for this valuable warmup-excercises! I have just picked up my bass after three months without tuching it at all, feeling helpless - until I found exactly the tools to get back on the track again. Best regards Johnny Voss Denmark
I'm a big fan of Ms.Julia!! Have u got an old bass laying that you want to throw away? If so please toss it out as i'm too poor to afford one but this vidoes keeps me motivated and reminds that one day i will also own a bass guitar that my so heart so desires!! Never ever stop making music Ms Julia it gives me hope and so many others hope!! Stay blessed!
Great suggestions. I also stretch & rotate my neck & shoulders otherwise I can get a sore shoulder; also helps with relaxation. Plus, I have a basic jazz book. Good to do simple jazz exercises to warm up.
Thank you for that. I often cramp up during the third set or the encores. I used to do warm ups but just got lazy I guess. Time do do my warm ups new, chow
After stretching my hands and back, I like to play an ascending arpeggio exercise. start on C and play major arpeggio, then minor arpeggio and ascend up chromatically. I think i learned this from a Daric Bennett video. I also like to play major and minor scales in broken 3rds and 5ths. After the ascending arpeggios and broken 3rds and 5ths. I'm warmed up and ready to go! EDIT: i had commented before watching the entire video and see Julia does the broken 3rds as well. Nice!
Returning to music and wanted to try something new so bought a bass. Every time I see one of your videos I take something away from it. You and your style are so centered that I’m able to take it all in without any anxiety or confusion. I’ve learned more about muting from watching you play than from videos actually dedicated to muting. Thank you!
Thank you very much, Julia, for this warm-up exercise with all the tips! You are really a great motivator. I've just started playing my bass and it's really very helpful!!
Im gunna follow this warm up regimen next time I doo a session. As u can see there isa session in session...Actually, Im 56yrs old and hav been playing 30+ yrs and our gal, Julia is playing circles around me. I think my goal will be to learn all this and sit outside the session and play this while ppl walk in/outta the studio? Thx as always Julia! Blessings, dUg-Montesano, WA/USA
Try this.. Finger tips touching of both hands out in front of you. Flex the pyramid it forms to stretch the muscles. No need to push hard just flex back and forth. Next while flexing rotate your hands pointing away from you and back towards your self. That motion builds the muscles in the arms that help move the hands. You will feel the difference right away. This has helped the arthritis in my hands greatly. I hope it helps you or others.
Her warm-up is full practice for me.😀
Sadly that's true for me aswell mostly. But at least I'm putting that work in regularly
same but we got this!! lmao
you got to play scales across all modes and notes with pattern variation!!!! that is really good practice even if you don't get to do all the work.
Have not played consistently in almost a decade. Picked up and dusted the old bass today again. Thank you for the exercises!
same, I wish it was like a bike where you remember everything you learned for life!
Man that bass has incredible lines ..... wow.
The top of the fretboard looks like F. Jazz & the bottom of the fretboard is wide like a Fender P. 🙂
The smile of Julia warms me up instantly :)

One of the things I play for a warm up is Groove is in the Heart. Gets the old fingers ready to go and gets me in that funk state of mind too. :D
Came here for those ghost notes 3:58 yeeeeaaaaah there we are
Thanks for the tips Julia
Hey LeeR, hahah thanks a lot! // Cheers, Julia

Great warmup lesson - TQ
Hello Julia! I really like your bass!
Thanks for your lesson!
awesome video, you can really see the patterns her fingers are forming
The exercise with the position shift looked like what they teach upright players. Very concise execution too.
Thank you Julia

You are wonderful! I am loving youuuuu. Those videos are GREAT!
I love your personality Julia😍🌷👏
I always have cold hands and fingers, so this will be great for me. I can play so much faster and cleaner once warmed up!

I like to stretch my forearms muscles. It makes my playing more relaxed. Playing should always be relaxed, just as any motion you do with your body.
Great stuff, always interesting to see how other people warm up. Thanks for sharing this!
More groove lessons please!!!! Nice videos Julia, thanks!
Very instructive !! Thanks Julia 🙏
Thank you very much Julia, these exercises are very useful.
Yes, indeed, She is Amazing! Thank You, Jesus
thanks for the tips, Julia, very helpful!
Been doing similar things for years, great for the hands
I’m doing the 2 octaves scales with different fingers, but these are very useful tips i think. Thank you so much
Thanks for nice warm-up exercises! Having taken lessons in classic guitar I would suggest to use three fingers on the right hand, though.
very good lesson thank you

This is great. Thanks
Stretching and flexing hands and fingers carefully is helping me lots.
As someone who's just starting out again (I took a 12 YEAR break..) this warmup is daunting lol But hoping to get there soon with plenty of practice!
Super interesting, thanks so much! I'm still learning where the strings are, so this kind of thing will come, hopefully, pretty soon.
